Dubbin, like our Bareback Footwear Luxury Dubbin, is a wax-based treatment that feeds the leather with almond oil and natural waxes while adding water repellence. It's ideal for smooth and waxed leather boots, but it should never be used on suede or crushed nubuck as it will change the appearance and finish.

A waterproofing spray, such as the Bareback Leather Protector & Waterproofing Spray or Collonil Carbon Pure Waterproofer, works differently: it creates an invisible, breathable barrier on the surface rather than feeding the leather itself. Sprays are the safer choice for suede and nubuck, and the Nubuck & Velour Spray range is formulated specifically for those finishes.

Suede and nubuck need gentler handling. Start with the Wooden Handled Suede Brush or Euroleathers Combi Brush to lift dirt and restore the nap, then condition with Collonil Rustical Lotion for oily or greasy suede, and waterproof with the Nubuck & Velour Spray. Smooth and waxed leather boots respond better to dubbin, wax polish and cleaning foam. As a general guide, sprays such as the Collonil Carbon Waterproofing Protector should be reapplied roughly every week for boots in heavy daily use, or every two to three weeks for boots worn less often. Always apply to a clean, dry boot from around 15cm away, let it dry fully, and spray twice for the best coverage — especially before you wear new boots for the first time.

If your boots need a little extra support, the Bareback X-Comfort Insoles add cushioning and arch support for boots that run slightly large. Make sure the boot is clean and completely dry, then spray a waterproofing product such as the Bareback Leather Protector & Waterproofing Spray evenly from around 10-15cm away. Work it in with a soft brush, remove any excess with a dry cloth, and leave to dry for 24 hours before wearing.

For boots worn daily or in wet conditions, reapply a waterproofing spray roughly every week; for less frequent wear, every two to three weeks is usually enough. Condition smooth or waxed leather with dubbin whenever it starts to look dry, and always let boots dry naturally away from direct heat before treating them.
