Dubbin vs Waterproofing Spray — What's the Difference?

Dubbin, like our Bareback Footwear Luxury Dubbin, is a wax-based treatment that feeds the leather with almond oil and natural waxes while adding water repellence. It's ideal for smooth and waxed leather boots, but it should never be used on suede or crushed nubuck as it will change the appearance and finish.

A waterproofing spray, such as the Bareback Leather Protector & Waterproofing Spray or Collonil Carbon Pure Waterproofer, works differently: it creates an invisible, breathable barrier on the surface rather than feeding the leather itself. Sprays are the safer choice for suede and nubuck, and the Nubuck & Velour Spray range is formulated specifically for those finishes.

Caring for Suede & Nubuck vs Smooth Leather

Suede and nubuck need gentler handling. Start with the Wooden Handled Suede Brush or Euroleathers Combi Brush to lift dirt and restore the nap, then condition with Collonil Rustical Lotion for oily or greasy suede, and waterproof with the Nubuck & Velour Spray. Our Suede Boots Care Package and Vancouver Brown Care Package bundle the right products together for these finishes.

Smooth and waxed leather boots respond better to dubbin, wax polish and cleaning foam. Use the Bareback Footwear Luxury Dubbin to condition and waterproof, the Bareback Premium Wax Polish for shine and colour, and finish scuffed areas fast with Hewitts Quick Shine. The Waxed Leather Boots Care Package and Montana Boots Care Package cover this routine in one kit.

How Often Should You Waterproof Your Boots?

As a general guide, sprays such as the Collonil Carbon Waterproofing Protector should be reapplied roughly every week for boots in heavy daily use, or every two to three weeks for boots worn less often. Always apply to a clean, dry boot from around 15cm away, let it dry fully, and spray twice for the best coverage — especially before you wear new boots for the first time.

Insoles & Comfort Accessories Explained

If your boots need a little extra support, the Bareback X-Comfort Insoles add cushioning and arch support for boots that run slightly large. For cold weather, the Natural Sheep Skin and Natural Wool Lined Insoles bring warmth and comfort. The Pedag Soft Cushioning Insoles suit sensitive feet or looser-fitting boots, while the Pedag 'Pretty' Half Insoles and Pedag Heel Cushioning Raisers are ideal if you just need to take up room around the heel.

Keeping Laces, Shape and Storage in Good Order

Worn laces are an easy fix with our Bareback Replacement Laces, suitable across the lace-up boot range. Use Boot Trees to keep tall boots crease-free in storage, and protect them further in transport with the Riding Boot Bag or Boot Storage Bags. A Boot Jack and Shoe Horn make getting boots on and off far easier, especially for taller or snugger styles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I waterproof my leather boots?

Make sure the boot is clean and completely dry, then spray a waterproofing product such as the Bareback Leather Protector & Waterproofing Spray evenly from around 10-15cm away. Work it in with a soft brush, remove any excess with a dry cloth, and leave to dry for 24 hours before wearing.

Can I use dubbin on suede or nubuck boots?

No — dubbin wax, including our Bareback Footwear Luxury Dubbin, is not recommended for suede or crushed nubuck as it will change the appearance of the nap. For these finishes, use a dedicated product such as Collonil Rustical Lotion or the Nubuck & Velour Spray instead.

How often should I condition or waterproof my boots?

For boots worn daily or in wet conditions, reapply a waterproofing spray roughly every week; for less frequent wear, every two to three weeks is usually enough. Condition smooth or waxed leather with dubbin whenever it starts to look dry, and always let boots dry naturally away from direct heat before treating them.

What's the best way to store leather boots?

Clean and treat your boots before putting them away, then use Boot Trees to help tall boots keep their shape and stay crease-free. A Riding Boot Bag or pair of Boot Storage Bags will keep dust off and protect the leather between wears.

Which insole should I choose for extra comfort?

For general cushioning and arch support, try the Bareback X-Comfort Insoles. For cold weather, the Sheep Skin or Wool Lined Insoles add warmth. If your boots feel loose around the heel rather than underfoot, the Pedag 'Pretty' Half Insoles or Heel Cushioning Raisers are a better fit.

Do you sell a care kit matched to my boots?

Yes — we've put together ready-made kits for specific ranges: the Waxed Leather Boots Care Package, Suede Boots Care Package, Vancouver Brown Care Package for brushed nubuck, and the Montana Boots Care Package covering smooth, suede and nubuck finishes.

Do you sell replacement laces and boot socks?

Yes — our Bareback Replacement Laces fit across the lace-up boot range, and the Premium Long Merino Socks are designed to complement the fit and feel of Bareback boots, with moisture-wicking, odour-resistant Merino wool for all-season comfort.
