Riding vs Country Long Boots – What's the Difference?

Long riding boots such as the Vermont, Montana, Georgia and Graceland are cut and soled for time in the saddle, with slimmer profiles, spur rests on some models, and outsoles designed for the stirrup. Country and yard boots such as the Dakota and Quebec are built more for time on your feet around the yard or in the field, usually with a more durable waterproof construction and a chunkier, grippier sole. If you're mainly riding, our Long Riding Boots collection narrows things down to the dedicated riding models. If you're mostly mucking out, walking dogs or doing yard chores, our Long Country Boots collection is a better starting point.

Which Long Boots Are Waterproof?

Not every long boot on this page is waterproof, and we'd rather tell you that upfront than have you find out in a puddle. The Vermont, Dakota, Quebec, Polar Storm and Alaska all use a Wil-Tex® or W-Tex® waterproof membrane confirmed in their product details, making them genuine wet-weather options for the yard or a rainy hack. The Kentucky, Montana, Andalucia, Nebraska, Georgia, Graceland and Milan are not waterproof – they're built for comfort, fit and everyday durability rather than standing in wet grass all morning.

Long Boots for Wide Calves

Several models here are available in a wider calf fit, including the Montana, Andalucia, Dakota and Alaska, while the Kentucky's fully adjustable lace system flexes from standard right up to wide. If a roomier calf is your main priority, our dedicated Wide Calf Riding and Country Boots collection gathers every wide-fit option in one place, including sizing notes to help you choose between standard and wide.

Lining and Comfort Compared

Lining is where these boots differ most. The Polar Storm and Alaska use genuine sheep wool for maximum warmth, the Nebraska has sheep wool through the full leg and footbed for cold winter days, and the Montana and Andalucia combine a sheepskin insole with a Therma-tex layer for warmth without the bulk. The Georgia, Graceland and Milan use a full leather lining for a smarter, more breathable everyday feel, while the Quebec uses an X-Comfort® memory foam insole for cushioned, quick slip-on comfort.

How Long Boots Should Fit

A well-fitted long boot should sit close against your calf without gaping at the top, allow you to bend your knee freely in the stirrup, and leave a thumb's width of space at the toe. If you're between calf sizes, models with an adjustable lace or gusset panel – such as the Kentucky, Andalucia and Polar Storm – give you a bit more flexibility than a fixed classic fit. Always check the individual product's size guide before ordering, and get in touch with our team if you're unsure between two sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all Bareback long boots waterproof?

No. Only boots with a confirmed waterproof membrane are described as waterproof on our product pages – these currently include the Vermont, Dakota, Quebec, Polar Storm and Alaska. Other models, like the Montana and Andalucia, use moisture-wicking linings rather than a full waterproof membrane, so they're better suited to dry or lightly damp conditions.

Which long boots are best for wide calves?

The Montana, Andalucia, Dakota and Alaska are all available in a wide calf fit, and the Kentucky's adjustable lace system covers standard to wide in one boot. For the full wide-fit range with sizing guidance, visit our Wide Calf Riding and Country Boots collection.

What's the difference between the Montana and Andalucia boots?

Both are non-waterproof, standard-to-wide fit boots with a sheepskin insole, but they're built differently. The Montana has a Duratred® moulded outsole and a full-length elasticated zip for a simple pull-on fit. The Andalucia has a rear stretch gusset and a full leg lace system giving up to 3.5cm of extra calf adjustment, making it the better choice if you need more flexibility around the calf.

Can I wear long boots for everyday country walks, not just riding?

Yes – boots like the Dakota, Quebec, Alaska and Polar Storm are built with country and yard use in mind, with durable waterproof linings and grippier outsoles for wet fields and muddy yards. The more riding-focused boots, such as the Georgia or Graceland, will work for a country walk too, but they're cut with the stirrup in mind rather than heavy daily yard use.

How much calf adjustment do lace-up long boots give?

It varies by model. The Andalucia's lace system gives up to 3.5cm of extra width, the Kentucky's full-length adjustable laces flex from standard through to wide calf shapes, and the Polar Storm uses a full leg lace system with a soft gusset for a similarly adjustable fit. If you're between sizes, one of these adjustable models is usually a safer bet than a fixed classic fit.

Are the Milan boots worth buying on clearance?

Yes, provided the size is right for you. The Milan Long Dress Riding Boots are a clearance line, so stock is limited to remaining sizes, but the boot itself is unchanged – full leather lining, a Vibram® sole and a smart, high dressage cut. Check the size guide carefully before ordering, as clearance sizes won't be restocked once sold out.

How do long boots differ from yard or ankle boots?

Long boots extend up to or over the calf, giving support for riding and protection from mud and wet grass, whereas yard and ankle boots stop at or just above the ankle for quicker, lighter everyday wear. If you're deciding between the two, our long boots suit riding, dressage and wet yard conditions, while a shorter boot suits quick jobs around the yard where you don't need calf coverage.
