Wide Calf Riding and Country Boots

18 products

Bareback's wide calf range is built around a simple truth: riders develop fuller calves, and standard sizing shouldn't be a barrier to a well-fitting boot. Our Andalucia riding boot uses a full-leg lace system to adjust up to 3.5cm wider than standard calf, while the Montana riding boot and Dakota country boot are available in a dedicated wide fit from the factory. For shorter styles, the Quebec mid-calf waterproof boots are generous through the calf, while the Quebec ankle boots are a standard ankle fit with a roomier foot and zip entry depending on the model. Wide Calf Boots Buying Guide

Finding riding and country boots for wider calves is harder than it should be. We’ve built this collection around boots that genuinely accommodate a fuller calf — whether through a dedicated wide fit, an adjustable leg lace system, or an elasticated gusset. All our boots are made from calfskin leather in Portugal.

How Much Wider Is Wide Fit?

This depends on the boot style, so here’s a breakdown:

  • Andalucia: The full-leg lace system adjusts up to 3.5cm wider than our standard calf measurement. This gives the most flexibility and is why the Andalucia is our top recommendation for wider calves. You can fine-tune the width at multiple points up the leg.
  • Montana & Dakota: Available in two distinct fits — standard calf and wide calf. The wide calf versions are cut with extra room throughout the leg from the factory. You order the specific fit you need.
  • Quebec mid-calf: The wide fit versions are generous through the calf, with extra room in the mid-calf section – well-suited to people with a wider lower leg or wider foot.
  • Quebec ankle: A standard ankle fit rather than a calf-width option. They offer a roomier foot feel, and the zip-up ankle style helps a high instep & easier entry.

If you’re unsure which fit applies to your measurements, get in touch — we’re happy to advise before you order. We also offer Made to Measure options for the most precise fit possible.

Andalucia vs Montana: Which Wide Calf Riding Boot?

Both are long riding boots available for wide calves, made from calfskin leather with a sheepskin insole and Therma-tex lining. The key difference is in how the calf width is handled.

The Andalucia uses a full-length leg lace system that lets you set the calf width precisely — anywhere up to 3.5cm wider than standard. This is ideal if your calf is between sizes, or if it varies across the height of the leg. The rear OPTI zip then lets you get in and out without adjusting the laces each time.

The Montana comes in a fixed standard or wide calf — you choose the fit at the time of ordering rather than adjusting it yourself. It has a Duratred® steel-shank sole for particularly strong arch support. If your calf measurement sits clearly in the wide range without needing fine-tuning, the Montana is a great choice.

Do I Need a Wide Calf Boot or Made to Measure?

Our wide fit range covers most wider calves well, but Made to Measure becomes the better option if:

  • Your calf measurement is significantly larger than our wide fit range accommodates
  • You have an unusual leg shape — for example, a wide calf with a narrow ankle, or a calf that is very wide at the top and narrows sharply
  • One leg is notably different from the other
  • You want a truly bespoke fit for competition or professional use

Our Made to Measure range offers 27 styles made to your exact measurements in Portugal. If you’re unsure whether wide fit will work for you, get in touch and we can help you decide before you commit to either option.

Tips for Measuring Your Calf

Calf measurement should be taken at the widest point of the calf — usually around one-third of the way up from the ankle. Use a soft tape measure and measure both legs, as they can differ slightly. Take the measurement in the morning if possible, as calves can swell over the course of a day (particularly after riding).

For the Andalucia, you’ll also want to measure at the top of the boot shaft (just below the knee) and at the narrowest point of the ankle, as the lace system adjusts at multiple heights. Our size guide for each boot shows the exact measurements for standard and wide fit. If you’d like help interpreting your measurements, get in touch before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Bareback boot is best for the widest calves?

The Andalucia offers the greatest flexibility, with a full-leg lace system that adjusts up to 3.5cm wider than our standard calf. If the Andalucia isn’t wide enough, our Made to Measure range can be tailored to your exact measurements with no upper limit on calf width.

Are any of the wide calf boots waterproof?

Yes — the Dakota Waterproof long country boot is available in wide fit with a Wil-tex® waterproof membrane. The Quebec mid-calf boots (waterproof with WIL-TEX®) also come in a generous wide-calf fit; the Quebec ankle boots are a standard ankle fit with a roomier foot and zip entry rather than a calf-width option. The Andalucia and Montana are not waterproof — they are leather riding boots designed for breathability in the saddle.

Can men buy wide calf boots from Bareback?

Yes — the Andalucia, Montana, Dakota, Alaska Storm, Quebec (mid-calf) and Quebec Ankle boots all come in men’s sizes as well as women’s. Bareback sizes run in EU sizing which translates directly to both UK men’s and women’s shoe sizes. If you’re unsure about sizing or calf fit for men’s legs, get in touch and we can advise.

Do wide calf boots stretch over time?

Calfskin leather does soften and mould with wear, but it won’t stretch significantly in the calf — particularly on structured riding boots with a stiff leg. If the boot is too tight across the calf from the outset, it is unlikely to become comfortable with wear. It’s always better to order the correct width from the start. For the Andalucia, the lace system means you can adjust the fit as the boot breaks in, which helps maintain a snug but comfortable fit throughout the boot’s life.
