Most of our waterproof boots use a genuine Wil-Tex® or W-Tex® membrane, confirmed in the product description of each one — including the Quebec, Dakota, Hudson, Idaho Storm, Kentucky Storm, Rocky, Vancouver, Vermont, Chatsworth, Blair, Chicago, Alaska, Ottawa and Polar Storm ranges.

Some of our best-loved boots, such as the Montana, Andalucia, Idaho Jodhpur, Kentucky Long Riding, Graceland, Nebraska, Bronx, Buffalo, Harley and Bramham, are not waterproof. They use breathable membranes or leather linings instead, which suit dry arena or stable work but won't keep you dry in driving rain — for that, reach for a Wil-Tex lined pair.

If you need extra room through the calf, the Montana Riding Boots and Dakota Waterproof Country Boots both come in a dedicated wide-calf fitting alongside their standard fit. The whole Quebec waterproof family (mid-calf, ankle, zip-up and wool-lined) is built on a wide last, and the Alaska Storm Waterproof Boots also come in wide fit.

For a fully adjustable option, the Andalucia and Kentucky Long Riding Boots use lace or lace-panel systems that let you fine-tune the calf width yourself rather than relying on a fixed fitting.

The Andalucia Boots offer up to 3.5cm of lace adjustment through the calf, so they can be taken in for a slimmer leg or let out as needed. The Kentucky Long Riding Boots and Kentucky Storm Waterproof Jodhpur Boots both use fully adjustable lacing too, described as suiting standard through to wide calf shapes on the same pair.

If you have a narrower foot or high instep, the standard (non-wide) Quebec Ankle Boots or the Graceland Long Riding Field Boots — with their close side-stretch panel fit — tend to suit better than the wide-fit Quebec options.

Long riding boots — Montana, Vermont, Kentucky Long Riding, Andalucia, Nebraska and Graceland — come up over the calf with a low riding heel, built for time in the saddle. Country boots such as the Dakota and Hudson Storm are a similar height but tend to prioritise all-weather protection over a saddle-friendly heel.

Jodhpur boots — the Idaho, Kentucky Storm, Chatsworth and Blair ranges, plus Bramham — sit at the ankle and are designed to be worn with jodhpurs and half chaps, on or off the horse. Short ankle and country-casual boots, like the Buffalo, Harley, Bronx, Ottawa and Toddy, are built more for the yard, dog walks and everyday wear.

For the warmest winter wear, look for natural sheep wool lining — used in the Rocky Winter, Alaska, Ottawa, Polar Storm and Nebraska boots. For breathable comfort in the arena, the Montana, Andalucia and Idaho Jodhpur boots use Therma-Tex or leather linings designed to wick moisture without a full waterproof membrane.

Most of our waterproof jodhpur boots (Idaho Storm, Kentucky Storm, Chatsworth, Blair) use a removable X-Comfort® memory foam insole for cushioning, while the Quebec family uses the same X-Comfort® insole with a PU and rubber sole for extra grip on wet yards.

A well-fitted boot should sit close around the ankle and instep without gaping, while leaving enough room in the calf that you can comfortably flex your knee in the saddle. If you're between our standard and wide fittings, or your boots are gaping at the top even though your foot fits well, size up to the wide-calf version of the same style rather than sizing up your shoe size.

For adjustable-lace styles such as the Andalucia or Kentucky ranges, fit the boot to your ankle and instep first, then use the lacing to fine-tune the calf. Wear the socks you'll actually ride or work in when you try boots on, as this can noticeably change the fit.

No. Around half of the range uses a genuine Wil-Tex® or W-Tex® waterproof membrane — including the Quebec, Dakota, Hudson, Idaho Storm, Kentucky Storm, Rocky, Vancouver, Vermont, Chatsworth, Blair, Chicago, Alaska, Ottawa and Polar Storm boots. Others, such as the Montana, Andalucia, Idaho Jodhpur, Kentucky Long Riding, Graceland and Nebraska, use breathable (but not waterproof) linings instead. Check the Waterproof column in the table above before you buy if wet weather is a priority.

The Montana Riding Boots, Dakota Waterproof Country Boots and Alaska Storm Waterproof Boots all offer a dedicated wide-calf fitting. The entire Quebec waterproof family is built on a wide last as standard. If you'd rather fine-tune the fit yourself, the Andalucia and Kentucky Long Riding Boots use adjustable lacing that works across standard to wide calf shapes.

Despite the shared name, these are two different boots. The Kentucky Long Riding Boots come up over the calf and explicitly do not have a waterproof membrane, so they're best kept for dry arena and stable work. The Kentucky Storm Waterproof Jodhpur Boots are an ankle-height jodhpur boot with a genuine Wil-Tex® waterproof membrane, available in six colourways from Mocha to Polished Navy.

Yes. Many customers wear our country and jodhpur boots for dog walking, yard chores and general country life as well as riding. The Ottawa, Hudson, Quebec and Rocky waterproof ranges are all built with a Duratread® or Dual Grip outsole for traction underfoot, on the yard or off it. For a more casual everyday boot, the Buffalo, Harley, Bronx and Toddy styles aren't marketed as riding boots but work well as robust ankle boots for daily wear.

Yes, on a number of our most popular styles. The Montana and Dakota boots are available in both standard and wide calf as separate fittings, and several jodhpur styles including the Kentucky and Andalucia ranges use adjustable lacing to cover a wider range of calf shapes within one boot.

Waxed leather boots such as the Andalucia, Quebec, Dakota, Rocky, Bronx, Buffalo and Hudson respond well to a leather cleaner and protector spray, followed by a dubbin to replenish waxes and reinforce water repellency. Suede boots such as the Chicago and Toddy need a dedicated suede protector, brush and scuff eraser rather than wax-based products.
