Wider Foot Fit

A wider foot shows up as pressure across the ball of the foot and the little-toe joint — the boot feels tight side to side, and you often see the leather bulge or the seams strain there. A high instep is different: it is the height over the top of your foot, near the laces or the point where your foot bends. If you can get your toes in but the boot feels tight over the bridge, or it is a fight to pull on, that is usually instep rather than width. The boots in this collection are built with more room through the forefoot for the first, and styles like the Quebec Ankle Zip and Quebec Mid-Calf Zip add a side zip that opens the boot up for the second.

This is the one people mix up most. A wider foot is about the width and depth of the foot itself — the toe box and the instep. A wider calf is about the circumference higher up the leg, which only matters on taller boots. This collection is built for the foot. Every Rocky and every Quebec in this collection has a genuine waterproof membrane — the Rocky uses a Wil-Tex membrane, and the Quebecs use a Stormproof Wil-Tex lining that is both waterproof and breathable. That covers the Quebec Mid-Calf, the ankle and zip versions, and the wool-lined Quebec Wool-Lined Zip. The Bronx and the Detroit steel toe boot are not waterproof — the Bronx has a breathable membrane for everyday comfort and the Detroit has a breathable work lining, so treat both as shower-resistant rather than waterproof.

Because these boots are cut with extra room, most people find their normal size works well — you should not need to size up just to get width. If you wear thin socks or your foot is on the narrower side of wide, the removable insoles help: the Rocky, Quebec and Detroit all come with a removable insole you can swap or double up to take up a little space. If you have a fuller foot or a high instep, a thinner sock and the standard insole will give you the most room.
