Country Boots

Long boots (approx. 39–44cm): the best choice for horse riding, smart country shows, and conditions where you want mud protection up to the knee. The Hudson Storm is the warmest long option with its sheep wool lining and Therma-tex, while the Vermont Storm adds a steel shank for additional in-stirrup support. The Andalucia is a non-waterproof long boot — ideal for dry summer shows where you want a wider colour choice and calf adjustment.

Mid-calf (approx. 30–35cm): a practical middle ground for yard work, dog walking, or country walks. The Hudson Mid carries the same sheep wool insole and tasselled zip as its long counterpart but stops below the knee. The Quebec Zip-Up and Alaska Storm both serve wide foot shapes in this height range.

Ankle: quickest on and off, and well suited to drier days or use with waterproof over-trousers. The Ottawa Storm adds wool lining and waterproofing; the Kentucky Storm offers the widest colour selection in the range. The Rocky and Chicago offer a rugged, waterproof choice for Muddy, wet walks. The Harley, Franklin and Dixie suit smarter or indoor occasions.

Any boot that is Waterproof says waterproof in the name. Confirmed models with a waterproof membrane include:

The Andalucia, Harley, and Franklin Chelsea do not carry a waterproof membrane. Any boot that is not waterproof are made from leather, which provides some natural resistance to light damp, but they are not suitable for sustained wet conditions as they do not have a waterproof membrane.

Several styles in the country range are designed specifically for wider calves:

• Long: the Andalucia comes in standard, wide, and adjustable fit — the front lacing adds up to 3.5cm of extra calf width, making it the most flexible option. The Dakota is the waterproof long boot available in wide fit.
• Mid-calf: the Quebec Zip-Up Mid Calf and Quebec Pull on are both good for a wider-fit .
• Ankle: the Quebec ankle and Quebec Zip-Up Ankle have a wide fit shape.

If your calves fall between standard and wide, the Hudson Storm (long) and Hudson Mid both feature an adjustable tasselled zip gusset that allows you to widen the calf panel without stepping up to a full wide fit.

Three styles in this collection offer adjustable calf fit rather than a fixed standard or wide option:

• Hudson Storm (long) and Hudson Mid use a tasselled OPTI zip gusset that allows the calf panel to expand at the top. This suits riders who wear breeches or thicker socks that add bulk, or anyone who finds one boot fits the foot perfectly but feels snug at the calf.
• Andalucia uses a rear lace system that provides up to 3.5cm of additional calf width. It is also available in a dedicated wide fit, giving the broadest range of calf sizes of any boot in the collection.

If you are unsure whether to order standard or wide, an adjustable style is often the safest choice — it removes the need to size up and risk a looser fit around the foot.

If warmth is a priority, look for wool or sheepskin lining:

• Hudson Storm (long) and Hudson Mid: sheep wool insole and Therma-tex lining — the warmest options in the range at their respective heights.
• Alaska Storm: sheep wool lining in a wide-fit mid-calf boot — ideal for wide-calved wearers in autumn and winter.
• Ottawa Storm: sheep wool lining in an ankle-height waterproof boot.
• Quebec Wool-Lined Mid Calf: shearling lining throughout; wide fit, zip-up style in Brown.

The Andalucia uses a sheepskin insole which provides some warmth underfoot but is not a lined boot in the traditional sense. The Quebec Zip-Up ranges and most ankle styles use a standard insole and are not specifically designed for winter temperatures.

If you're on the borderline between standard and wide, the adjustable fit on the Hudson Storm and Hudson Mid is worth considering.

The long boots — Vermont Storm, and Montana — work well for flat riding and hacking, reaching the correct height for use with breeches and offering a straight leg profile. The Vermont Storm adds a steel shank for additional support in the stirrup. The shorter ankle and mid-calf styles are better suited to yard work than in-saddle riding, as they do not provide the leg coverage or shank support that riding typically requires (hoever can be paired with chaps for the best of both!

The leg should sit close to the calf without pinching — you should be able to slide two fingers inside the top. Allow around a centimetre of space at the toe. If the leg fits but the foot feels tight, consider a wider foot style; if the foot fits but the calf feels loose, an adjustable style such as the Kentucky Long or Andalucia will let you tighten up the fit. Country boots will soften and mould to your foot with wear, so a snug (not painful) fit from new is normal.
