Which Height Works Best on the Yard?

Long boots — the Hudson Storm and Dakota give full calf coverage, keeping your legs clean when mucking out deep beds. The Hudson Storm adds sheep wool lining and an adjustable toggle for a closer fit; the Dakota comes in standard and wide calf and two colours.

Mid-calf boots — the Quebec range, Rocky, and Alaska Storm strike a balance between coverage and ease of use. They pull on quickly for yard trips and still protect the lower leg from mud and wet bedding. The Alaska Storm and Rocky Winter Mocha add wool lining for colder mornings.

Ankle boots — the Vancouver Storm, Ottawa Storm, and Quebec ankle boots are lighter and easier to move in, though they leave more of the leg exposed. The Ottawa Storm adds sheep wool lining for warmth.

Jodhpur boots — the Kentucky Storm and Chatsworth Storm are designed to be worn with jodhpurs and work in both the stable and the saddle.

Which Yard Boots Suit a High Instep or Wide Foot?

A zip entry makes it much easier to get a boot on if you have a high instep or limited ankle mobility, as you can open the boot fully before stepping in.

The Quebec Zip-Up Mid Calf, Quebec Zip-Up Ankle, and Quebec Wool-Lined are all specifically described as ideal for those with a high instep, limited ankle mobility, or a wider foot, thanks to the OPTI zip entry. The standard pull-on Quebec is also built on a wide-fit last, as is the Alaska Storm.

Please note that the Ottawa Storm and Chatsworth Storm are not recommended for those with a high instep — both product descriptions flag that entry may be difficult.

Which Yard Boots Are Warm Enough for Winter?

Several styles include wool or shearling lining for warmth on frosty mornings:

  • Alaska Storm — sheep wool lining, mid-calf, waterproof, wide fit
  • Hudson Storm — sheep wool with Therma-tex layer, long, waterproof, adjustable
  • Ottawa Storm — sheep wool lining, ankle, waterproof, Dual Grip outsole (note: not ideal for high instep)
  • Rocky Winter Mocha — sheep wool lining, mid-calf, waterproof
  • Quebec Wool-Lined — shearling lining, mid-calf, waterproof, OPTI zip (good for high instep & wide foot)
  • Nebraska — sheep wool lining, long — note: not waterproof

For the coldest days, the Hudson Storm or Alaska Storm provide the most insulation alongside a waterproof membrane.

The Quebec Range Explained

The Quebec is Bareback's most versatile yard boot, available in five versions across mid-calf and ankle heights. All carry a STORMPROOF WIL-TEX® waterproof membrane and are built on a wide-fit last.

If you're unsure which Quebec to choose: go for the pull-on for a standard foot; choose a zip-up for a high instep or wide foot; choose the Wool-Lined if cold mornings are the priority.

Hudson Storm vs Dakota: Which Long Waterproof Boot?

Both are full-length waterproof boots, but they suit different priorities.

The Hudson Storm is the warmer option, lined in sheep wool with a Therma-tex layer and an adjustable toggle system for a closer calf fit. It comes in Chocolate only. If warmth and adjustability are the priority — particularly for winter yard work — the Hudson Storm is the better choice.

The Dakota uses a Wil-tex® 360° waterproof membrane and Duratread outsole, and comes in Brown and Blue. It's available in both standard and wide calf. If you need a wide-calf long boot or want more colour choice, the Dakota is the one to look at.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Bareback yard boots waterproof?

Most boots in this collection carry a Wil-Tex waterproof membrane (the Quebec range uses STORMPROOF WIL-TEX®), and will keep your feet dry in wet grass, muddy fields, and stable conditions. The exceptions are the Nebraska (wool-lined but no waterproof membrane), the Bronx, and the Buffalo, which are breathable but not waterproof.

Which boots are best for mucking out?

For mucking out, height and waterproofing are the main things to consider. A mid-calf or long boot keeps mud and wet bedding off the lower leg. The Quebec, Alaska Storm, and Rocky are practical mid-calf choices. For deeper beds or turning out in muddy fields, the long Dakota or Hudson Storm give more coverage.

Can I ride in yard boots?

The jodhpur-height styles — Kentucky Storm and Chatsworth Storm — are designed for use with jodhpurs and are suitable for riding as well as yard work. The long Dakota and Hudson Storm can also be used for hacking. The mid-calf and ankle pull-on styles are primarily designed for yard and walking use rather than riding.

Which yard boots are best if I have a high instep?

Zip-entry boots are the safest choice if you have a high instep or limited ankle flexibility. The Quebec Zip-Up Mid Calf, Quebec Zip-Up Ankle, and Quebec Wool-Lined are all specifically described as ideal for high instep, limited ankle mobility, or a wider foot. Please avoid the Ottawa Storm and Chatsworth Storm if you have a high instep — both may be difficult to enter.

How should yard boots fit?

Your heel should sit firmly in the boot with minimal movement when walking, and there should be around a thumb's width of space at the toe. For pull-on styles, the calf fit is fixed — check the product description for stated widths (standard, wide, or adjustable). Zip-entry boots give you more flexibility on entry. If you plan to wear thicker socks in winter, consider sizing up slightly, particularly with the wool-lined styles. If you're unsure on sizing or fit, call us on 01886 888873 — the team knows each style and can help.
