Only the boots that name a membrane in their description. In this sale that means the Storm models — Vermont Storm, Idaho Storm, Vancouver Storm, Ottawa Storm, Delaware Storm, Alaska Storm, Polar Storm, Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm, Kentucky Storm Jodhpur and Hudson Storm — plus Dakota, Quebec, Rocky, Chicago and the Hudson ankle and mid.

Everything else is leather with a breathable or moisture-wicking lining. That is not the same thing. Therma-tex and Dermo Dry move sweat away from the foot; they do not keep standing water out.

Three routes. First, the models offered in a dedicated wide calf fitting: Montana, Dakota, Andalucia and Lucianna — choose the wide option in the size dropdown rather than sizing up in length.

Second, the adjustable boots. Andalucia gives up to 3.5cm through the full-leg lace system and is the most adjustable long boot here. Kentucky Long laces the whole leg and fits the majority of calves. Polar Storm does the same at mid-calf height, and is waterproof.

Third, avoid the close-fitting competition boots — Georgia, Milan and Piaffe are cut deliberately slim.

For a wide foot: Delaware Storm has the most generous all-day fit of the waterproof short boots. Idaho is the roomiest jodhpur boot. Toddy, Tulsa and Bronx all run roomy, and the Tulsa insole can be removed for extra depth.

For a high instep: Blair Storm is the one we recommend — the full lace opens right down and it was designed for people who struggle with pull-on boots. Kentucky Long does the same job in a long boot.

Two to be careful with: Chatsworth can be tight across the instep, and Ottawa is a pull-on that a high instep may find awkward to get into.

Most of the range is true to size, but a few are not, and on a sale page with limited stock it is worth getting right first time:

• Size up: Roxy (a full size up from your usual Bareback), Ohio (snug fit)
• Runs small: Milan, Phoenix, Pinto, Pasadena (slightly)
• Size down if between: Sovereign — sizing is generous
• Runs slightly large: Hudson Storm

Warmest. Sheep wool through the whole boot: Alaska Storm, Polar Storm, Ottawa Storm, Rocky Winter and Nebraska. These are winter boots and will be too warm for a summer day.

Most breathable. Full leather linings on Idaho, Windsor, Rio, Graceland and Milan. The Kentucky Jodhpur in Havana is deliberately the more breathable alternative to the Storm version, and Pinto uses a breathable composite rather than leather.

Most cushioned underfoot. Memory foam X-Comfort insoles on Blair Storm, Kentucky Storm, Hudson, Quebec and Detroit. All are removable if you wear your own orthotics.

Sale stock is what is left, not a full size run. A few practical points:

• Open the size dropdown before you fall in love with a colour. Several models here are down to one or two sizes, and where that is the case the product title says so.
• Where a boot comes in standard and wide calf, those are separate options in the dropdown — do not size up in length to gain calf room.
• Suede models (Roxy, Valencia, Pasadena, Dixie, Chicago) should be sprayed with a suede protector before first wear.
• If you are unsure between two models, our team will talk it through — the fit notes on each product page are the same ones we use.

No. Despite the name of the collection they sit in, the Kentucky Long riding boots do not have a waterproof membrane and should not be used as a wellington boot. They are a robust, comfortable, fully adjustable riding boot with a Dermo Dry moisture-wicking lining.

If you want a waterproof long riding boot, the Vermont Storm is the one — W-Tex® lining with a gusseted zip.

Same boot, different lining and closure. The Idaho has a breathable premium leather lining and is the more comfortable choice in warm weather. The Idaho Storm adds a WilTex® waterproof lining and a sealed leather tongue behind the YKK® zip, so it keeps water out the way a pull-on boot would while still zipping up.

If you ride year round and only want one pair, take the Storm. If your riding is mostly dry-weather, the original is cooler on the foot.

It comes down to foot shape and how you like to get the boot on.

• Idaho — the roomiest. Best if you have a wider foot.
• Windsor — slightly slimmer than the Idaho, laced front with speed hooks. Best for a narrower foot.
• Bramham — laced front plus a side zip, so you set the fit once and then step in.
• Blair Storm — full lace opening and waterproof. Best for a high instep or high volume foot.

Yes, and several are better suited to it than to the saddle. The Rocky and Buffalo were designed for exactly that — grippy Duratread soles, ankle support and all-day cushioning. Vancouver Storm and Chicago do the same job with a smarter finish.

The jodhpur boots with spur rests and stirrup-profiled soles (Idaho, Windsor, Rio) will walk perfectly well, but you are paying for riding features you will not use.

Yes — sale boots come with the same free UK delivery and returns as full-price orders, so you can try them at home and send them back if the fit is not right. Please return them unworn and in their original packaging.

Because sale sizes are limited, an exchange may not always be possible in the same model. If the size you need has sold out we will refund rather than hold the order.

It depends on the model. Current-season lines such as Montana, Idaho, Rocky and Dakota are restocked through the year, so a size that has gone in the sale may return at full price. End-of-line colourways and the single-size remainders will not be repeated.

If a size you want is unavailable, use the back-in-stock notification on the product page — it will email you if that exact size returns.

Brush off dry mud, wipe with a damp cloth and let them dry naturally away from direct heat — a radiator will crack the leather. Then feed them: our Luxury Dubbin softens, conditions and helps waterproof waxed and nubuck uppers.

Suede is different — brush the nap with a suede brush and use a protector spray, never dubbin or wax. And note that a waterproof membrane sits inside the boot, so conditioning the outside does not affect it; it is still worth doing to stop the leather drying out.
