Waterproof vs non-waterproof — which do you need?

Around two-thirds of the boots in this collection use a Wil-Tex® (or Stormproof Wil-Tex®) waterproof membrane, confirmed in each product description. Waterproof styles include the Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm, Ottawa Storm, the whole Quebec range, Hudson Ankle, Chicago, Vancouver Storm, Rocky and Rocky Winter, Alaska Storm, Polar Storm and Malvern.

If you don't need waterproofing, the non-waterproof jodhpur styles — Idaho Jodhpur, Bramham and Harley — are more breathable and often preferred for indoor riding or warmer weather. Our casual styles (Toddy, Buffalo, Bronx, Franklin Chelsea, Dixie Cowboy and Barco Deck Shoe) and the Detroit Steel Toe Cap work boot are also not waterproof.

Best ankle boots for a wide or hard-to-fit foot

Several styles offer built-in adjustability for wider feet, high insteps, or awkward-to-fit ankles.

  • Kentucky Storm — a unique lace-and-zip system lets you adjust the instep, ankle, and foot width independently. The most practical choice if a standard jodhpur boot never quite fits.
  • Quebec Zip-Up Ankle and the Quebec Wool-Lined Zip-Up — the side zip makes entry considerably easier than a pull-on, particularly if you have a wide foot or high instep.
  • Quebec Ankle Pull-On and Quebec Mid-Calf Pull-On — both offer a wide fit option for extra width rather than height adjustment.
  • Alaska Storm — a wide-fit mid-calf boot with a decorative buckle that also helps you fine-tune the fit around the ankle.
  • Polar Storm — a full-leg lace system lets you adjust the fit around the calf, useful if you find most boots too snug or too loose at the top.
Riding, yard work, or everyday wear?

Not every boot in this collection is built for the same job.

Best for wet weather and winter

If you need a boot for the coldest, wettest days, look at the wool and shearling-lined options: Rocky Winter (natural sheep wool), Polar Storm (sheepskin lining with an adjustable full-leg lace), Ottawa Storm (sheep wool with stretch panels) and the Quebec Wool-Lined Zip-Up (shearling with a thermal insole). All four are confirmed waterproof via a Wil-Tex® membrane, so they combine warmth with weatherproofing rather than one or the other.

Lining, comfort and support compared

Insoles and linings vary quite a bit across the range:

  • X-Comfort memory foam insoles feature in the Kentucky Storm, Blair Storm, the Quebec range, Hudson Ankle, Detroit Steel Toe Cap and Malvern.
  • Cambrella linings (breathable, moisture-managing) are used in the Idaho Storm, Idaho Jodhpur and Vancouver Storm.
  • Natural sheep wool or shearling is used in Rocky Winter, Ottawa Storm, Polar Storm, Alaska Storm and the Quebec Wool-Lined Zip-Up, for boots you'll want on the coldest days.
  • Perlon and Therma-Tex moisture-wicking footbeds are used in the Rocky.
  • Soft leather or fabric linings without a technical membrane are used across the casual and non-waterproof range — Toddy, Buffalo, Bronx, Franklin Chelsea, Dixie Cowboy, Bramham, Harley and the Barco Deck Shoe.
How ankle boots should fit

Ankle boots should feel snug around the heel and ankle without pinching, with enough room to wiggle your toes at the front. Most of our styles are a standard (D) width fit — if you have a wider foot or a high instep, choose one of the wide-fit or adjustable options noted above rather than sizing up, as this usually gives a better overall fit than extra length alone. For riding boots, check the shank type (moulded or arched) sits comfortably against your stirrup, and wear the socks you'll actually ride in when trying boots on, as thicker socks can change how a snug boot feels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all the ankle boots in this collection waterproof?

No. Around two-thirds of the range is confirmed waterproof via a Wil-Tex® or Stormproof Wil-Tex® membrane, including the Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm, Ottawa Storm, the full Quebec range, Hudson Ankle, Chicago, Vancouver Storm, Rocky, Rocky Winter, Alaska Storm, Polar Storm and Malvern. The Idaho Jodhpur, Bramham, Harley, Toddy, Buffalo, Bronx, Franklin Chelsea, Dixie Cowboy, the Barco Deck Shoe and the Detroit Steel Toe Cap work boot are not waterproof, even where a "Waterproof" tag appears elsewhere on the site — we've checked each product description individually to confirm this.

Which ankle boots are best for wide calves or a wide foot?

For a wide foot or high instep, look at the Quebec Zip-Up Ankle, Quebec Wool-Lined Zip-Up, Quebec Ankle Pull-On or Quebec Mid-Calf Pull-On, all of which offer a wide fit option, plus the Alaska Storm. The Kentucky Storm's lace-and-zip system also accommodates a wide foot well, as the lace can be loosened independently of the zip to give more room across the instep.

Which boots should I choose for horse riding versus yard work?

For riding, choose from the Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm, Idaho Jodhpur, Bramham or Harley — these have a moulded or arched shank designed for the stirrup. For yard work and country walking, the Quebec range, Ottawa Storm, Hudson Ankle, Chicago, Vancouver Storm, Rocky, Rocky Winter, Alaska Storm, Polar Storm and Malvern are built with anti-slip soles for wet, uneven ground rather than for riding, though they're perfectly comfortable worn around horses.

How should ankle boots fit?

They should feel snug around the heel and ankle without pinching, with a little room to move your toes at the front. If you have a wide foot or high instep, a dedicated wide-fit or adjustable style will usually fit better than simply sizing up. Try boots on with the socks you intend to wear them with, since this can noticeably change the fit.

What's the difference between the Kentucky Storm and the Idaho Storm?

Both are waterproof jodhpur boots, but they suit different feet and preferences. The Kentucky Storm uses a lace-and-zip system that lets you adjust the fit at the instep, ankle, and foot width independently, making it the better choice for feet that are hard to fit in a standard pull-on or zip boot — it's also available in six colourways. The Idaho Storm uses a traditional front YKK® zip with an arched shank, double side spur rests, and an air release valve in the heel for ventilation. If you want a classic-looking waterproof jodhpur without a lace system, the Idaho Storm is the right choice.

Can I wear the Quebec or Ottawa Storm boots for dog walking and country walks?

Yes. The Quebec range, Ottawa Storm, Vancouver Storm and Rocky are all built with anti-slip soles and a waterproof membrane, making them a practical choice for dog walking and country walks as well as yard use. If you're regularly out in very wet or muddy conditions, the wool-lined options — Rocky Winter, Ottawa Storm or the Quebec Wool-Lined Zip-Up — will keep your feet warmer too.

Are the Franklin Chelsea and Dixie Cowboy boots still in stock?

Both are currently reduced-price clearance stock, so availability is limited to remaining sizes. If you like the block-heel Chelsea styling of the Franklin or the Western-inspired look of the Dixie Cowboy, we'd suggest checking your size and ordering promptly, as we won't be restocking these lines once they sell out.
