Waterproof vs Not: What's Actually Confirmed

Every boot in this collection except one uses a genuine waterproof membrane or lining, most commonly our Wil-Tex® or W-Tex® membrane. The Quebec range, Vancouver Storm, Dakota, Ottawa Storm and Vermont Storm are all confirmed waterproof from the product specification.

The Detroit Steel Toe Cap Work Boots are built with a breathable lining for site safety rather than a waterproof membrane, so we don't badge them as waterproof. If wet-weather protection is your priority, choose one of the other models in this range instead.

Best for Wide Calves and Wide Feet

If you need more room around the calf, the Dakota Waterproof Country Boots come in Standard and Extra Wide Calf fittings, so you can pick the size that matches your leg rather than compromising on comfort.

For a wider foot or a high instep, the zip-up Quebec styles — Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Mid Calf Boots and Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Ankle Boots — use a side zip that opens the boot right up, making them easier to get on than a pull-on style if your foot or ankle needs the extra space.

Best for Yard Work, Country Walks and Riding

For the yard and cold, wet mornings, the Ottawa Storm Waterproof Short Boots pair a genuine sheep wool lining with a fully waterproof membrane and a Dual Grip outsole that copes well underfoot in mud.

If you're after a taller boot for riding, the Vermont Storm Waterproof Long Riding Boots have a 2cm heel suited to the stirrup, a full-length side zip, and the same Dual Grip sole for security in and out of the saddle. The Dakota Waterproof Country Boots are a good all-round option for general country pursuits.

Slip-On or Zip-Up: Which Is Easier to Put On

The original Quebec Waterproof Boots and Quebec Waterproof Ankle Boots use a rear pull tab and elasticated panel, so they go on in one motion with no laces or zips to fiddle with.

If you find a straight pull-on a bit snug, the zip-up Quebec models add a side zip for a wider opening, which is often easier if you have a high instep or reduced ankle mobility. The Vermont Storm Waterproof Long Riding Boots also use a full-length side zip, useful for a taller boot shaft.

Lining, Comfort and Support
  • Quebec range: STORMPROOF Wil-Tex® lining with X-Comfort® memory foam insole and a gel heel insert.
  • Vancouver Storm: Wil-Tex® membrane with a removable Cambrella cushioned insole and moulded shank.
  • Dakota: Wil-Tex® 360° membrane with a cushioned insole and integrated moulded shank for stability.
  • Ottawa Storm: Genuine sheep wool lining and removable sheep wool insole for extra warmth underfoot.
  • Vermont Storm: W-Tex® lining with a suede-effect removable insole and built-in steel shank.
  • Detroit: Breathable lining with a removable X-Comfort® memory foam insole and moulded shank.
How These Boots Should Fit

All our slip-on and zip-up boots are designed to be worn with a normal sock thickness rather than bulky socks, since the waterproof lining already adds warmth. Choose your usual UK shoe size as a starting point.

For calf fit, check the Calf Fit column in the table above. The Dakota Waterproof Country Boots offer a genuine Extra Wide Calf option, while several Quebec styles carry a Wide Fit for a roomier foot and ankle. If you're between fits or unsure which to choose, get in touch before ordering and we'll help you pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all the boots in this collection waterproof?

Almost all of them. The Quebec range, Vancouver Storm, Dakota, Ottawa Storm and Vermont Storm all use a confirmed waterproof membrane or lining. The Detroit Steel Toe Cap Work Boots are not waterproof — they use a breathable lining designed for safety footwear rather than wet-weather use.

Which boot is best for wide calves?

The Dakota Waterproof Country Boots are our only style with a dedicated Extra Wide Calf fitting alongside Standard, so they're the best choice if calf room is your main concern.

What's the difference between the Quebec Waterproof Boots and the Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Mid Calf Boots?

Both share the same STORMPROOF Wil-Tex® lining, X-Comfort® insole and outsole. The original Quebec Waterproof Boots go on with a rear pull tab, while the Zip Up Mid Calf version adds a side zip, which opens the boot wider — a better fit if you have a high instep, limited ankle mobility or a wider foot.

Can I wear these boots for riding or yard work?

Yes. The Vermont Storm Waterproof Long Riding Boots are built specifically for riding, with a 2cm heel and Dual Grip outsole. The Ottawa Storm Waterproof Short Boots and Dakota Waterproof Country Boots are also well suited to yard work and general country use.

Are the Detroit Steel Toe Cap Work Boots waterproof?

No. They're built around a reinforced steel toe cap and breathable lining for site safety, not a waterproof membrane. If you need wet-weather protection as well as toe protection, get in touch and we'll help you find the right option.

How should slip-on waterproof boots fit?

Order your usual UK shoe size and wear a normal-thickness sock — the waterproof lining already adds warmth, so bulky socks aren't needed. Check the Calf Fit column above if you need a wider calf, and contact us before ordering if you're between sizes.

Do you offer free UK delivery and returns?

Yes, all orders include free UK delivery and free returns, so you can try your boots at home and send them back if the fit isn't right.
