Waterproof vs Non-Waterproof Leather Riding Boots

If you're riding or turning out in wet weather, a waterproof membrane makes a real difference. Our Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm and Blair Storm jodhpur boots all use a Wil-Tex or WilTex waterproof membrane, and the Vermont Storm long riding boot uses a W-Tex waterproof lining.

Everything else in the collection, including the Idaho Jodhpur Boots, Bramham Zip Jodhpur Boots, Montana, Andalucia, Kentucky Long, Graceland, Milan and the Nebraska, is built for breathability rather than waterproofing. These are better suited to dry yard work, hacking in fair weather, or competition, and none of them should be treated as wellington boot alternatives.

Best Leather Riding Boots for Wide Calves

The Montana Riding Boots are made in both a standard and a genuine wide calf fitting, in black, brown and blue. The Andalucia Boots use a full leg lace system that adjusts up to 3.5cm of extra calf width, so they suit both standard and wider calves in one boot. The Kentucky Long Riding Boots also use fully adjustable laces, described as suiting standard to wide calf shapes.

Long Riding Boots vs Jodhpur Boots

This collection includes two different boot heights. Long riding boots – the Montana, Vermont Storm, Nebraska, Kentucky Long, Graceland and Milan – come up to the knee and give the most consistent leg contact for flatwork and dressage. Jodhpur boots – the Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Idaho, Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm, Bramham and Andalucia – sit at ankle height and are usually worn with half chaps or gaiters, and tend to be easier to get on and off for everyday yard use.

Lining, Comfort and Support
  • The Andalucia and Montana boots use a natural sheepskin insole for extra cushioning.
  • The Nebraska is fully sheep wool insulated through the leg and foot, making it the warmest boot in the range for winter.
  • The waterproof jodhpur boots (Kentucky Storm, Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm) use a removable X-comfort or gel insole for shock absorption.
  • The Graceland and Milan boots use a Vibram® outsole, which gives noticeably better grip on hard yard surfaces than a standard leather or rubber sole.
  • Most models in the collection include a built-in steel or moulded shank for arch support through the stirrup.
How Leather Riding Boots Should Fit

Leather riding boots should sit close around the calf without gaping, and give at least a small amount of room to flex at the ankle in the stirrup. If you're between our standard and wide calf fittings, styles like the Montana and Andalucia give you the option to choose the fit that suits your leg shape, or rely on an adjustable lace system for a closer fit day to day. New leather will soften and mould to your leg with wear, so expect a slightly firmer feel for the first few rides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all the leather riding boots in this collection waterproof?

No. Only the boots marked Yes in the Waterproof column of the table above – the Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm and Vermont Storm ranges – have a confirmed waterproof membrane or lining. Every other model is built for breathability rather than wet weather protection.

Which leather riding boots are best for wide calves?

The Montana Riding Boots come in a dedicated wide calf fitting alongside standard. The Andalucia Boots and Kentucky Long Riding Boots use adjustable lace systems that stretch to accommodate a wider calf in the same boot.

What's the difference between the Kentucky Long Riding Boots and the Kentucky Storm Jodhpur Boots?

They share the same adjustable lace fastening and moulded comfort insole, but the Kentucky Long is a knee-height riding boot with no waterproof membrane, while the Kentucky Storm is an ankle-height jodhpur boot with a fully waterproof Wil-Tex lining. Choose the Long for a traditional riding boot silhouette, or the Storm if you need a shorter boot for wet-weather yard work.

Can I wear these boots for everyday yard work, not just riding?

Yes. Jodhpur boots such as the Idaho and Bramham are designed for quick on/off wear and are comfortable for general yard duties. If you need wet-weather protection for mucking out or turnout, choose one of the waterproof Storm styles instead.

How should riding boots fit around the calf?

You should be able to sit down in the boot with a small amount of ease behind the knee, and the leather shouldn't dig in when your leg is against the saddle flap. If a standard fit feels tight, check whether your model is available in our wide calf fitting or has an adjustable lace panel before sizing up in length.

Why are the Milan Long Dress Riding Boots reduced in price?

The Milan Long Dress Riding Boots are a clearance line, so pricing is reduced while current stock lasts. Sizing and quality are unaffected, but availability is limited to the sizes currently listed.

Do leather riding boots need breaking in?

All our leather riding boots will soften with wear as the leather moulds to your leg and foot, so expect them to feel a little firmer for the first few outings. Removable insoles, such as those in the Idaho and Bramham ranges, can also be swapped for your own if you want extra cushioning while they break in.
