Waterproof vs Non-Waterproof Jodhpur Boots

Five of our seven jodhpur boot styles use a Wil-Tex or WilTex® waterproof membrane, so waterproofing is a genuine option rather than an exception. The two non-waterproof styles — the Idaho and Bramham Zip — prioritise breathability and leather feel for drier conditions.

If you ride in the UK and spend time on the yard between sessions, a waterproof boot will earn its keep year-round. The Kentucky Storm and Blair Storm both use an adjustable lace system so you can fine-tune the fit and seal around the ankle. The Idaho Storm and Chatsworth Storm use a sealed gusseted zip instead — a neater look, though slightly less adjustable. The Ottawa Storm stands out with its sheep wool lining, making it the warmest waterproof option in the range.

If you ride mainly in an indoor school and keep a separate yard boot, the Idaho or Bramham Zip will give you a more breathable, leather-feel boot that is lighter to wear on warmer days.

Which Jodhpur Boot Has the Best Fit?

Jodhpur boots are ankle-height by design, so fit comes down to the instep, toe box, and how the boot closes around the ankle rather than calf circumference.

  • Adjustable lace system: The Kentucky Storm and Blair Storm both feature a front lace system over the instep — ideal if you have a higher or lower instep than average, or if one foot differs from the other. You set the laces to your width and ankle support preference, then use the side zip to get in and out.
  • Bramham Zip: Also offers an adjustable fit via front laces combined with a side zip and twin elasticated panels. A good option if you want a more traditional leather look alongside the flexibility of a lace-up.
  • Chatsworth Storm: If you have a high instep, we would suggest trying another style — we have noted this in the product description. The sealed gusseted zip leaves less room for adjustment.
  • Idaho & Idaho Storm: Standard fit with a front zip. Suit most foot shapes well and are easy to get on and off.

If you are unsure about fit, our team is happy to advise — just get in touch before ordering.

Which Jodhpur Boot Is Best for Cold Weather?

If warmth is a priority, the Ottawa Storm is the only boot in our jodhpur range lined with genuine sheep wool — both the footbed and ankle are wool-lined, making it noticeably warmer than the other waterproof styles. It also has a Dual Grip outsole that works well both in the saddle and on the yard.

For milder winters, the other waterproof styles — Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm, and Blair Storm — will keep your feet dry without the added bulk of a wool lining. Pair with a warm riding sock and they will see you through most of the British winter.

Insole Comfort and Underfoot Support

The insole makes a real difference during long rides or days on the yard. Here is how our jodhpur boots compare:

  • Kentucky Storm & Blair Storm: Memory foam X-comfort insole — cushioning and shock absorption. Removable so you can replace it if needed.
  • Chatsworth Storm: Gel IMPACT insole — maximum shock absorption, useful on hard-footing and yard surfaces.
  • Ottawa Storm: Removable sheep wool insole — warm and naturally cushioning.
  • Idaho & Idaho Storm: Removable Cambrella lined insole with arched shank support underfoot.
  • Bramham Zip: Suede cushioned removable insole with performance arch support built into the sole.

Every model features some form of shank support to stabilise the foot in the stirrup and reduce fatigue over longer rides.

How Jodhpur Boots Should Fit

A well-fitting jodhpur boot should sit snugly around the ankle without pinching, with the heel sitting firmly in the heel cup and no slipping when you walk. Because jodhpur boots are ankle-height, there is no calf measurement to consider — the main variables are foot width, instep height, and toe box length.

We recommend sizing true to your UK shoe size. If you are between sizes, go up rather than down — leather softens with wear, but a boot that is too small will not stretch enough. Wear the socks you would normally ride in when trying boots for the first time.

Allow a little extra room at the toe — your foot moves forward slightly when in the stirrup, and a tight toe box will become uncomfortable on longer rides. If you have a particularly wide or high instep, consider the Kentucky Storm, Blair Storm, or Bramham Zip, all of which have an adjustable lace system for a more customised fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Bareback jodhpur boots waterproof?

Five of our seven jodhpur boot styles are waterproof: the Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Ottawa Storm, Chatsworth Storm, and Blair Storm. All use a Wil-Tex or WilTex® waterproof membrane. The Idaho and Bramham Zip are non-waterproof and are better suited to drier conditions or indoor arenas.

What is the difference between the Kentucky Storm and the Idaho Storm?

Both are waterproof jodhpur boots, but they suit different preferences. The Idaho Storm has a more traditional look with a front YKK® zip and rounded toe — clean and easy to get on and off. The Kentucky Storm uses an adjustable lace system over the instep with a side zip for entry, making it more customisable if you have a wider or narrower foot, a high instep, or want to vary ankle support. The Kentucky Storm also uses a memory foam X-comfort insole, while the Idaho Storm has a Cambrella lined insole.

Can I wear jodhpur boots for yard work and dog walking?

Yes — our waterproof jodhpur boots are well suited to yard work, dog walking, and light country walking. The Ottawa Storm with its Dual Grip outsole is particularly good off-road. For yard work, the Idaho Storm and Chatsworth Storm are both popular choices: waterproof, hard-wearing, and easy to clean. The non-waterproof Idaho and Bramham Zip are better kept for drier conditions and the arena.

Which jodhpur boots are best for wide or narrow feet?

The Kentucky Storm, Blair Storm, and Bramham Zip all feature adjustable lacing over the instep, which gives the most flexibility for wider or narrower feet. The twin elasticated panels on the Bramham Zip also help accommodate different foot widths. If you are unsure which will work best for your foot shape, get in touch and we will help you narrow it down.

Do jodhpur boots have spur rests?

The Idaho and Idaho Storm both feature rear spur rests. If spur compatibility is important to you, check the individual product description — not all styles in the range include them. Get in touch if you have questions about a specific boot.

How do I care for leather jodhpur boots?

Wipe off mud and dirt after each wear with a damp cloth and allow to dry naturally — avoid direct heat, which can crack the leather. Once dry, apply a leather conditioner or boot cream suitable for smooth calfskin. For the waxed calfskin used on the Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm, and Ottawa Storm, a wax-based conditioner helps maintain the finish. Store boots with a boot tree or stuffed with newspaper to hold their shape.
