If you need extra room through the calf, the Dakota Waterproof Country Boots come in Standard and Wide fit, as do the mid-calf styles in the Quebec Waterproof family (the ankle-height Quebec styles are a standard ankle fit rather than a calf fit). The Alaska Storm Waterproof Boots also suit both a standard and wide calf for a cosy, fleece-lined winter boot. If your calf size varies through the season, the Andalucia Boots have 5cm of lace adjustment, giving you flexibility between standard and wide without buying two pairs.

For time in the saddle, a jodhpur boot with an adjustable ankle and waterproof lining makes the biggest practical difference. The Kentucky Storm Waterproof Jodhpur Boots offer the widest colour range and a fully adjustable lace-and-zip fit. Wet concrete, muddy gateways and uneven grass all call for a boot that grips. The Ottawa and Malvern both use a Dual Grip outsole, designed specifically to perform on both yard surfaces and in the saddle.

Yard boots should feel snug through the heel with a little room to wiggle your toes, especially if you'll be wearing thicker socks for winter mucking out. For riding, a closer fit through the ankle and lower calf helps with contact in the stirrup, which is why most jodhpur boots use adjustable laces or an elasticated gusset.
