Waterproof vs Non-Waterproof Brown Riding Boots

If you're regularly out in wet fields or muddy yards, a waterproof boot is worth the investment. The Ottawa Storm, Vermont Storm, Idaho Storm and Kentucky Storm Waterproof Jodhpur Boots all use a fully waterproof membrane (Wil-Tex or W-Tex) that's confirmed to give proper protection from the elements.

Boots such as the Montana, Nebraska, Graceland, Kentucky Long and Bramham are not waterproof. That's not a downside if you mostly ride in dry conditions or an indoor school – the trade-off is often a softer, more breathable leather that moulds to your foot over time. If you're unsure, treat leather boots with a decent waterproofing wax rather than expecting them to keep out standing water.

Best Brown Riding Boots for Wide Calves

The Montana Riding Boots are the only model in this collection offered in both Standard and Wide calf fittings, so they're the obvious first choice if you know you need extra room.

If Montana isn't quite the style you're after, the Kentucky Long Riding Boots and both Storm Waterproof Jodhpur boots (Kentucky and Idaho) use fully adjustable lacing systems that flex from a standard to a wider calf shape, which can work well if your calf size varies through the season.

Jodhpur or Long Riding Boot – Which Style?

Jodhpur boots – like the Idaho, Bramham and Kentucky Storm Waterproof Jodhpur – sit at the ankle and are worn with jodhpur clips or half chaps. They're lighter, easier to move in on the yard, and generally quicker to pull on and off.

Long riding boots – the Montana, Nebraska, Graceland, Kentucky Long and Vermont Storm – run to just below the knee for extra leg protection and contact in the saddle, and give a smarter finish for showing or competition.

Lining, Comfort and Support
  • Nebraska and Ottawa Storm use genuine sheep wool for the warmest winter option.
  • Montana combines a sheepskin insole with a moisture-wicking membrane for all-round comfort.
  • Idaho and Idaho Storm Waterproof use a breathable leather lining with a removable Cambrella insole.
  • Vermont Storm pairs a breathable lining with a suede cushioned removable insole.
  • Graceland and Bramham are fully leather lined for softness and breathability.
  • Kentucky Storm Waterproof Jodhpur uses memory foam X-comfort technology in the insole.
How Riding Boots Should Fit

A well-fitted riding boot should feel snug around the ankle and calf without pinching, with enough room at the toe to wiggle your foot slightly. If you're between calf sizes, or your calf shape changes through the seasons, look at the adjustable-lace options such as the Kentucky Long or the Storm Waterproof Jodhpur boots, or choose the Montana in its Wide fitting.

Most of our boots have a low heel of around 2–3cm, which is designed to sit correctly in the stirrup. Wear the socks you'd normally ride in when trying boots on, and remember leather will soften and mould to your foot with wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these brown riding boots waterproof?

Some are, some aren't. The Ottawa Storm, Vermont Storm, Idaho Storm and Kentucky Storm Waterproof Jodhpur Boots all have a confirmed waterproof membrane. The Montana, Nebraska, Graceland, Kentucky Long, Idaho Jodhpur and Bramham boots do not have a waterproof membrane, so we wouldn't recommend them for standing water.

Which brown riding boots are best for wide calves?

The Montana Riding Boots come in a dedicated Wide calf fitting alongside the Standard fit. The Kentucky Long and both Storm Waterproof Jodhpur boots use adjustable lacing that also gives extra room for a wider calf shape.

What's the difference between the Idaho Jodhpur Boots and the Idaho Storm Waterproof Jodhpur Boots?

They share the same shape, arched shank sole and Cambrella-lined removable insole, but the Idaho Storm adds a fully waterproof WilTex® lining and a sealed, cushioned YKK® zip for wet-weather protection that the standard Idaho doesn't have.

Can I wear these for yard work as well as riding?

Yes. Most of our long riding and jodhpur boots are built for both riding and general yard use, with durable outsoles such as the Dual Grip and Duratred soles designed to cope with wet grass and uneven ground. The waterproof Storm models are particularly well suited to mucking out and turnout duties.

Which boot is warmest for winter?

The Nebraska Wool-Lined Long Riding Boots and the Ottawa Storm Waterproof Short Boots are both fully lined with genuine sheep wool, making them the warmest options in this collection – and the Ottawa Storm has the advantage of also being waterproof.

Can I wear these boots for competition or showing?

The long riding styles – Graceland, Montana, Nebraska, Kentucky Long and Vermont Storm – give the smartest, most traditional look and work well for showing and competition as well as everyday hacking. Jodhpur boots are better suited to schooling and yard wear.

Do you offer free delivery and returns?

Yes, all orders come with free UK delivery and free returns, so you can try your boots at home and send them back if the fit isn't quite right.
