Can you resole waterproof boots?

Can waterproof boots be resoled, and how to keep waxed leather protected with the updated Bareback care kit.

resole waterproof boots

Are your boots so comfortable you would love to keep them forever? We all have that favourite pair of waterproof boots we do not want to be without. A common question we get asked after years of wear is whether waterproof boots can be resoled.

Can my waterproof boots be resoled?

Sadly, the simple answer is no. Soles on waterproof boots are welted and stitched. Removing the sole can damage the waterproof membrane, which means the boots would no longer be fully waterproof.

Resoling waterproof boots

The waterproof membrane in our boots is an impermeable lining that encases the foot and leg area. Any weakness or hole created in this membrane can cause the boot to leak.

We can sometimes resole waterproof boots if the leather is still supple and if you are happy to accept that they will no longer be fully waterproof afterwards.

Treating leather boots

If a repair is still required, keeping the outer leather supple and protected will help the boots stay in better condition. Leather treatments need to be maintained regularly, especially if boots are used in wet, muddy or yard conditions.

For Bareback waxed leather boots, use the Waxed Leather Boots Care Package. It includes Leather Cleaner foam with a hog hair brush, Leather Protector and Waterproofer, Luxury Dubbin, a branded cloth and a storage bag.

  • Clean first: remove mud, salt and yard waste before applying any treatment.
  • Protect: use Bareback Footwear Leather Protector and Waterproofer to help guard against water, mud and everyday wear.
  • Condition: use Bareback Footwear Luxury Dubbin to soften, condition and add a water-repellent layer to waxed leather.

Do not use dubbin or waxed leather products on suede, nubuck or crushed nubuck. Those finishes need suede/nubuck-safe care products.
