Waterproof Country Boots

The right height depends on the conditions you walk in and how you plan to wear the boot:

• Ankle height (Quebec Ankle, Chicago, Ottawa Storm) — best for lighter country walks, errands and warmer months. Quick on and off. Note: the Ottawa Storm is not recommended for high instep.
• Mid-calf (Quebec pull-on, Vancouver Storm, Hudson Storm, Dakota, Rocky) — the most versatile choice for general country use. The shaft covers the lower leg and suits most paths, fields and yard conditions.
• Knee-high & long (Polar Storm, Vermont Storm) — for wet grass, deeper mud or riding. The Polar Storm uses a full-length lace system; the Vermont Storm is a long waterproof riding boot available in ladies' sizing.

Several models in the range accommodate wider calves:

• Dakota — standard and wide calf in Brown and Blue. One of the most popular wide-calf options in the range.
• Quebec (pull-on) — wide fit available in Black, Brown and Chestnut.
• Quebec Wool-Lined (zip) — wide fit available in Brown. (The Quebec zip ankle boot is a standard ankle fit; its zip aids entry and a high instep rather than adding calf width.)
• Alaska Storm — designed specifically for wider calves in Brown; check current stock levels.
• Hudson Storm — the adjustable calf strap suits calves that sit between standard and wide, or fluctuate seasonally.
• Polar Storm — the full-length lace system adjusts to fit a very wide range of calf sizes without a separate fit version.

Most boots in the range use a breathable waterproof membrane — excellent for active use in autumn and spring, but not specifically insulated. For cold weather, two options stand out:

• Quebec Wool-Lined (zip) — combines the Quebec's waterproof construction with a warm wool inner for cold, wet days.
• Rocky Winter — the warm-lined version of the Rocky boot, designed for winter conditions.

For extended time in cold conditions, a wool or thermal boot sock worn with any waterproof boot will make a significant difference to warmth without needing a specialist winter boot.

• Quebec — the most versatile, available in four heights (ankle to mid-calf) and in both pull-on and zip closures. Wide calf available. The safest choice if you want one boot that handles most situations.
• Vancouver Storm — a cleaner, more streamlined silhouette in standard calf only. Good if you prefer a neater profile and don't need the wide-fit option.
• Dakota — built with wider calves in mind, also available in standard. Comes in Brown and Blue. If calf fit is your primary concern, the Dakota or Alaska Storm should be your first consideration.

The Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm and Blair Storm are jodhpur-style waterproof boots — originally designed for riding and yard work but widely worn for country use. All have adjustable calf straps.

Yes. Every boot in this collection has been confirmed as genuinely waterproof through a waterproof membrane or waterproof construction — not just a surface treatment. The care sprays stocked alongside are for maintaining the leather and extending the boot's life, but the boots keep water out without them.

The Dakota (Brown and Blue), the Quebec pull-on (Black, Brown, Chestnut) and the Quebec Wool-Lined (Brown) all come in wide calf. The Alaska Storm is designed specifically for wider calves. The Hudson Storm has an adjustable strap and the Polar Storm laces fully — both fit a wide range of calves without a separate size designation.

Quebec is Bareback's flagship waterproof country boot, available in four distinct styles: pull-on mid-calf, pull-on ankle, zip ankle and zip mid-calf — plus a wool-lined zip version for winter. All share the same waterproof construction; the differences are height and closure. Pull-on versions are quicker on and off; zip versions give a closer, adjustable fit. The mid-calf versions are available in standard and wide calf in Black and Brown, with Chestnut in the pull-on mid-calf (UK 11–12); the ankle versions are a standard ankle fit.

Both the Ottawa Storm and Chatsworth Storm are noted in their product descriptions as not recommended for those with a high instep. The way the opening is structured means people with a prominent instep may find it difficult to get the boot on. If you have a high instep, the Quebec pull-on or Hudson Storm are better alternatives.

Most boots in the range are unisex or come in sizing that covers men's sizes — including the Quebec range, Vancouver Storm, Hudson Storm, Dakota, Rocky and Idaho Storm. For pull-on country boots, the foot bed should sit firmly without excessive heel movement, and the toe box should be comfortable but not tight. Waterproof boots don't stretch as much as non-waterproof leather boots — the membrane adds structure. If you're between sizes, size up. For mid-calf and long boots, the shaft should hold the calf snugly without pinching; wide-fit versions are available across several models if the standard calf feels too snug.
