Warm Boots Buying Guide

When temperatures drop, a well-lined boot makes the difference between a quick, cold chore and a long, comfortable day outdoors. Our Warm Boots collection brings together wool and sheepskin-lined riding boots, yard boots and ankle boots — many with waterproof Wil-Tex® or W-Tex® membranes — so you can stay out in the cold for longer.

Wool, Sheepskin or Therma-Tex: Which Lining Is Warmest?

Most of our warm boots use genuine natural sheep wool through the leg, foot or removable insole — this is the case in the Ottawa, Rocky, Alaska, Polar and Nebraska boots. Sheep wool is naturally moisture-wicking as well as warm, so feet stay dry as well as toasty.

The Quebec uses a plush shearling and wool thermal insole, giving a very cosy, slipper-like feel for slipping on and off around the yard.

The Hudson Storm and Hudson Mid boots pair a sheep wool insole with an integrated Therma-tex moisture-wicking layer through the leg, while Montana combines a sheepskin insole with the same Therma-tex layer for warmth that doesn't add bulk in the saddle. The Hudson Ankle boot uses an X-Comfort memory foam insole rather than wool, so it's a lighter, less insulated option best suited to quick trips rather than long, cold days.

Waterproof vs Non-Waterproof Warm Boots

Most boots in this collection use a Wil-Tex® or W-Tex® waterproof membrane, confirmed in the product description of each pair, so they're suited to wet yards, muddy fields and rain as well as cold. Browse the full range in our Waterproof Boots collection.

The Nebraska and Montana boots are not listed as waterproof — both use a moisture-wicking membrane and wool or sheepskin insulation for warmth, so they're better suited to cold, dry conditions or covered arena riding than standing water.

Best Warm Boots for Wide Calves

The Quebec boots are cut with a Wide Fit as standard, while the Alaska boots suit both a standard and wide calf, ideal if you have a higher instep or find standard boots tight to pull on. The Montana riding boot is available in both Standard and Wide Calf fittings across all three colourways, so you can choose the width that suits you.

Best Warm Boots for an Adjustable Fit

The Polar Storm has a full-leg lace system so you can adjust the calf width precisely, which is useful if your leg shape sits between our standard sizes. The Hudson Storm, Hudson Mid and Hudson Ankle boots all use a buckle opening for some adjustment at the top of the boot alongside their Standard fitting.

Layering Up for Extra Warmth

If you need a little more warmth on the coldest days, our Natural Sheep Skin Lined Insoles and Natural White Wool Lined Insoles can be added to almost any boot for extra cushioning underfoot. Pairing your boots with our Premium Long Merino Socks also helps, as Merino wool regulates temperature and wicks away moisture, keeping feet warmer for longer without feeling bulky.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all the boots in this collection waterproof?

No. Most are, using a Wil-Tex® or W-Tex® waterproof membrane, but the Nebraska and Montana boots use a moisture-wicking membrane rather than a confirmed waterproof one, so they're best for cold, dry conditions.

Which warm boots are best for wide calves?

The Quebec boots are cut with a Wide Fit as standard, and the Alaska boots suit both a standard and wide calf. The Montana is also available in Wide Calf across all three colours.

Which boots have an adjustable calf fit?

The Polar Storm has a full lace system for precise calf adjustment. The Hudson Storm, Hudson Mid and Hudson Ankle boots have a buckle opening that offers some adjustment.

What's the difference between the Hudson Storm, Hudson Mid and Hudson Ankle boots?

All three share the same Italian waxed leather, Duratread® or PU & rubber outsole and buckle detailing, but differ in height and lining. The Hudson Storm is a full-length boot with a sheep wool insole and Therma-tex leg lining for the most warmth. The Hudson Mid sits at mid-calf with the same wool insole and Therma-tex lining. The Hudson Ankle is a low-cut style with an X-Comfort memory foam insole rather than wool, making it the lightest and least insulated of the three.

Can I add extra insulation to my boots?

Yes. Our Sheep Skin Lined Insoles and Wool Lined Insoles can be added to most boots for extra warmth underfoot, and our Merino Socks add further warmth without a bulky fit.

How should warm boots fit?

Warm boots with a wool or sheepskin lining should feel snug but not tight, with enough room to wiggle your toes when wearing a normal riding or country sock. If you're between sizes or want extra cushioning, our removable insoles and Merino socks can help fine-tune the fit.

Are wool-lined boots suitable for wet weather?

Wool lining alone keeps feet warm but isn't waterproof by itself. Look for a boot that also has a Wil-Tex® or W-Tex® waterproof membrane, confirmed on each relevant product page, if you need warmth and protection from rain or mud. Explore our full Riding Boots and Yard Boots ranges for more options.
