Vaqueros Half Chaps

Put your boots on first, then wrap the half chap around your calf with the zip to the outside and any elastic gusset sitting comfortably. Start the zip from the bottom and work upward, keeping the chap smooth against your leg. New leather may feel firm at first and will soften and mould to your calf with wear. Choose from black, brown and navy.

Take two measurements while wearing your riding boots: the widest part of your calf, and the height from the floor to just below the bend of your knee. Use these against the size guide to find your fit. If you're between sizes, the leather will give a little as it beds in, so a snug rather than loose fit is usually best.

Wipe off mud and sweat after use and let them dry naturally, away from direct heat. Condition the leather now and then with a suitable dubbin or conditioner to keep it supple and water-resistant. Keep the zip clean and running freely, and store the chaps flat or rolled to avoid creasing.

Half chaps pair with jodhpur or paddock boots to give the appearance and leg protection of long boots at a lower cost. They add grip and stop the stirrup leathers pinching your calf, and they're just as handy for general yard work as for riding.
