Vaqueros Half Chaps Guide

Half chaps are worn over short boots to protect your lower leg and give the close, secure contact of a tall riding boot. Below is practical advice on fitting, measuring and caring for your Vaqueros leather half chaps so they perform and last.

How to fit your half chaps
Put your boots on first, then wrap the half chap around your calf with the zip to the outside and any elastic gusset sitting comfortably. Start the zip from the bottom and work upward, keeping the chap smooth against your leg. New leather may feel firm at first and will soften and mould to your calf with wear. Choose from black, brown and navy.
Measuring for the right size
Take two measurements while wearing your riding boots: the widest part of your calf, and the height from the floor to just below the bend of your knee. Use these against the size guide to find your fit. If you're between sizes, the leather will give a little as it beds in, so a snug rather than loose fit is usually best.
Caring for leather half chaps
Wipe off mud and sweat after use and let them dry naturally, away from direct heat. Condition the leather now and then with a suitable dubbin or conditioner to keep it supple and water-resistant. Keep the zip clean and running freely, and store the chaps flat or rolled to avoid creasing.
Wearing half chaps over short boots
Half chaps pair with jodhpur or paddock boots to give the appearance and leg protection of long boots at a lower cost. They add grip and stop the stirrup leathers pinching your calf, and they're just as handy for general yard work as for riding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do half chaps replace long riding boots?
Worn with short boots, they give a similar look and leg protection to tall boots and are a popular, more affordable option for everyday riding and yard use.
Will the leather stretch to fit?
Quality leather softens and moulds to your calf over the first few wears, so a snug initial fit usually settles into a comfortable one.
Which colour should I choose?
Black is the most versatile for competition and matches black boots; brown and navy suit country and casual riding. All three are available in this collection.
Can I wear half chaps for non-riding activities?
Yes. Many people wear them for general yard duties, walking and stable work for the added protection and warmth around the lower leg.
