Most people are. If boots from the high street generally fit you without feeling tight across the ball of the foot or loose enough to slip at the heel, a standard foot fit is your home. This collection is cut with a comfortable standard-to-generous last, so there is a touch more room through the foot than a slim style without tipping into a high-volume fit. If you know you need serious extra depth, look at the pull-on and zip Quebec boots or the roomier lace-ups; if you have a slim, low-volume foot, you may prefer to size carefully and use a thicker sock.

The collection spans all three. For quick jobs and everyday wear, ankle boots like the Rocky, Quebec ankle, Vancouver Storm and Bronx are easy on and off. For a bit more coverage without a full tall boot, the Quebec mid-calf and Hudson Mid sit neatly under the knee. For full-leg protection in the field or the saddle, go long with the Dakota, Montana or Hudson Storm.

The waterproof styles use a Wil-Tex membrane, which is both waterproof and breathable. That covers the Dakota, the full Quebec range, Rocky and Rocky Winter, Chicago, Vancouver Storm and the whole Hudson family. Others in this collection are breathable but not waterproof, including the Montana riding boot, the Idaho jodhpur, the Buffalo, Detroit and the Toddy and Barco styles. Aim for a snug hold at the heel with room to wiggle your toes and space for a normal sock. Because this range is cut on a comfortable, generous last, most people take their usual size. The Barco deck shoe is the exception — it fits generously, so we suggest going down half a size. Many insoles here are removable (the Rocky, Vancouver and Detroit among them), so if you want a firmer fit or your own orthotic, you can swap them out. A thicker or thinner sock is the easiest way to fine-tune from there.

This range already has a comfortable, generous foot fit, so it works well for most feet. If you need extra room to get in and out, the Opti zip-up Quebec ankle and mid-calf boots are specifically recommended for a high instep, limited ankle mobility or a wider foot. Note that the Dakota's front laces are decorative and not designed to adjust the calf, whereas the Montana uses a full-length elasticated zip.
