Most of this collection is genuinely waterproof, confirmed by a sealed membrane rather than just a treated leather upper. The Hudson range, the whole Quebec Waterproof line, the Dakota Waterproof Country Boots, Polar Storm, Alaska Storm and the Vermont Storm boots all use a Wil-Tex® or STORMPROOF WIL-TEX® membrane to keep water out while letting your feet breathe.

The Andalucia Boots, Nebraska Wool-lined Long Riding Boots and Milan Long Dress Riding Boots are not waterproof. The Nebraska is wool-insulated for warmth on cold days rather than sealed against water, and the Milan is a smarter dressage-cut boot better suited to the show ring than a wet field. If you'll be out in genuinely wet or muddy conditions, choose one of the waterproof models above.

If you need more room through the calf, the Quebec Waterproof Boots, Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Ankle Boots, Quebec Waterproof Zip-up Wool Lined Boots, Dakota Waterproof Country Boots and Alaska Storm Waterproof Boots are all available in Wide Fit.

For a fit you can fine-tune yourself, the Andalucia Boots have a full leg lace system giving up to 3.5cm of adjustable calf width, and the Polar Storm Waterproof Boots use a similar full leg lace for a personalised fit. The Hudson range's brass buckle opening also allows a little extra adjustment over the leg.

Warmth and comfort vary across the range. The Hudson boots, Polar Storm, Alaska Storm and the Quebec Waterproof Zip-up Wool Lined Boots all use genuine sheep wool for warmth in the leg and footbed – ideal for cold, early starts at the yard.

The rest of the Quebec range uses a Shock Absorbing X-Comfort® memory foam insole for all-day cushioning, while the Andalucia Boots combine a Therma-Tex moisture-wicking lining with a natural sheepskin insole. The Milan Long Dress Riding Boots are fully leather lined for a softer, more breathable fit suited to lighter wear.

For the wettest, muddiest days, reach for a fully waterproof, full-length boot. The Dakota Waterproof Country Boots, Quebec Waterproof Boots, Quebec Waterproof Zip-up Wool Lined Boots, Vermont Storm Waterproof Long Riding Boots and Hudson Storm Waterproof Boots all give tall leg coverage with a sealed membrane, so mud and standing water stay out.

If you only need protection around the ankle, the Quebec Waterproof Ankle Boots and Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Ankle Boots are quicker to pull on for shorter yard jobs while still keeping feet dry.

A long country boot should sit close enough through the calf to stay secure when walking through mud, but with enough give to pull on over thicker socks or jodhpurs. If you're between sizes or your calf measurement is towards the top of a size range, size up or choose one of the Wide Fit styles above rather than squeezing into a Standard fit.

The difference is height and fit: the Quebec Waterproof Boots come up to an attractive mid-calf height in Wide Fit, while the Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Ankle Boots sit at the ankle with a Premium Opti zip, making them a better choice if you have a high instep or find full mid-calf boots restrictive.

Yes. The waterproof, wool-lined styles such as the Dakota, Alaska Storm and Polar Storm boots are just as at home on a muddy country walk or dog walk as they are around the yard, keeping feet warm and dry over longer distances. The non-waterproof Andalucia and Nebraska boots are better suited to drier walks or general country wear.

They should sit snugly but comfortably through the calf, with room to accommodate thicker socks or jodhpur boots underneath if needed. If your calf is towards the top of a size range, choose a Wide Fit or adjustable-lace style rather than sizing down, and allow a short break-in period for the leather to mould to your leg.

Not ideally. The Milan Long Dress Riding Boots are a smarter, leather-lined dressage-cut boot rather than a waterproof yard boot, so they're best kept for drier, smarter occasions.
