Waterproof vs Non-Waterproof Field Boots

Most of our range uses a confirmed waterproof lining. The Quebec range (ankle, mid-calf and wool-lined styles) all use STORMPROOF WIL-TEX® lining, and the Vermont Storm Waterproof Long Riding Boots use W-Tex® waterproof lining. If you're regularly out in wet fields or muddy yards, one of these is the safer choice.

The Nebraska Wool-lined Long Riding Boots and the Graceland Long Riding Field Boots are not waterproof. Nebraska relies on sheep wool insulation for warmth in cold, dry conditions, while Graceland is a full leather-lined boot suited to smart, everyday wear rather than standing water.

Best Field Boots for Wide Feet or a High Instep

If you struggle to get boots over a high instep or wider foot, the Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Ankle Boots and the Quebec Waterproof Zip-up Wool Lined Boots are both tagged Wide Fit and built with this in mind. The Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Mid Calf Boots also has a roomy instep even though it isn't listed as Wide Fit.

Best Field Boots for Wet Weather

For genuinely wet, muddy conditions, choose a confirmed waterproof lining rather than just a water-resistant leather. The Vermont Storm Waterproof Long Riding Boots pair a W-Tex® lining with a dual grip outsole for secure footing in and out of the saddle, while the Quebec range uses STORMPROOF WIL-TEX® lining across ankle, mid-calf and wool-lined boots.

Lining, Comfort and Support
  • Quebec range: STORMPROOF WIL-TEX® waterproof lining with a shock-absorbing X-Comfort® memory foam insole
  • Quebec Waterproof Zip-up Wool Lined Boots: shearling and plush wool thermal insole for extra winter warmth
  • Nebraska: full leg and foot sheep wool insulation with a hidden rear elastic stretch spine for flexible fit
  • Graceland: full leather lining with a removable X-comfort moulded insole and built-in steel shank for arch support
  • Vermont: breathable lining through the leg and foot with a suede-effect cushioned removable insole and steel shank
How Field Boots Should Fit

Ankle and mid-calf Quebec styles are designed to pull on or zip easily, with elasticated panels or a full Opti zip so they should sit snugly without pinching. Long riding boots like Graceland, Nebraska and Vermont use a side zip with a stretch panel or elastic spine, giving a couple of centimetres of adjustment around the calf. If you're between sizes or have a wider calf, choose a style with a stretch panel, and wear the socks you'd normally ride in when trying boots on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all the field boots in this collection waterproof?

No. The Quebec range and the Vermont Storm Waterproof Long Riding Boots have a confirmed waterproof lining. The Nebraska Wool-lined Long Riding Boots and Graceland Long Riding Field Boots are not waterproof and are better suited to dry or smart wear.

Which boots are best for wider feet?

The Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Ankle Boots and Quebec Waterproof Zip-up Wool Lined Boots are both Wide Fit. The Quebec Waterproof Zip Up Mid Calf Boots also suits a higher instep, even though it isn't specifically labelled Wide Fit.

What's the difference between the Graceland and Vermont long riding boots?

Graceland is a full leather-lined boot with a Vibram® sole, built for smart, everyday wear rather than wet conditions. Vermont Storm has a W-Tex® waterproof lining and a dual grip outsole, making it the better choice if you need protection from mud and rain in and out of the saddle.

Can I wear these for dog walking or everyday wear, not just riding?

Yes. The Quebec waterproof ankle and mid-calf boots are popular for dog walking, the school run and general yard wear thanks to their easy slip-on or zip fastening. The long riding boots (Graceland, Nebraska and Vermont) work well for riding, but their taller leg also suits countryside walks in wet or cold weather.

Do any of these boots have a heel suited to stirrups?

Yes. The Nebraska Wool-lined Long Riding Boots have a 3cm heel and the Vermont Storm Waterproof Long Riding Boots have a 2cm heel, both designed with riding in mind. The Quebec ankle and mid-calf boots and the Graceland boots are better suited to yard and everyday wear.

Do you offer free UK delivery and returns on field boots?

Yes, all orders within the UK come with free delivery and free returns, so you can try your boots at home and send them back if the fit isn't right.
