If you need genuine weatherproofing, the Hudson Storm and Dakota are your best bet. Both use a Wil-Tex membrane that wraps the whole boot for 360° waterproofing, paired with a Duratread outsole for grip in the mud and muck of a working yard. The Montana, Andalucia, Graceland and Georgia are built from full grain or nubuck leather with moisture-wicking linings, which handle showers well but are not fully waterproof, so we would not recommend them for standing in wet fields all day.

Calf shape changes rider to rider, so several of our best-sellers come in more than one width. The Dakota and Montana are both available in Standard and Wide calf fittings in the same style. The Andalucia takes a different approach, with a full-leg lace system giving up to 3.5cm of adjustable width, which is useful if your calf size changes through the season or after time in the saddle.

If you want a closer, more tailored fit, look at the Georgia, which uses a calf-hugging nubuck stretch panel and a slim-line outsole for a neat, competition-ready profile. The Graceland sits between the two, with a 2cm side stretch panel for comfort without the bulk of a wide-calf boot, and a Vibram sole with a smart wood composite detail that works as well in the yard as it does for a quick trip into town.

Every boot in this collection is built with all-day comfort in mind, though the linings differ:

Long boots should sit close around the ankle and lower leg without pinching behind the knee when you bend it, and there should be no gap at the top when standing. If you are between calf sizes, or your calf measurement is close to the upper end of the standard range, choose one of the Wide Calf options above (Dakota, Montana or Andalucia) rather than sizing up in length. Wear the socks you would normally ride in when trying boots on, and allow a little room at the toe for thicker winter socks.

They should feel snug but not tight, with no rubbing behind the knee when bent and no gap at the top when standing straight. If you are unsure between two calf widths, choose the wider option, since a boot that is too tight is far less comfortable than one with a little extra room.
