More than
a boot brand

We answer the phones, test the boots, and care probably a bit too much about how they fit.

Family-run in rural Worcestershire since 2007 — we build footwear for muddy yards, wet walks and real life.

Our story →

A small team in Worcestershire — and we'd like you to know who we are

No call centre, no script. When you ring us, message us, or wait on a parcel, it's genuinely one of the five people below who'll help.

A wet marquee, a bar of Cadbury's, and a lot of boots that didn't fit

Back in 2007, we were doing what most weekends looked like then: standing in a marquee at a country show, in the rain, selling other people's riding boots. None of them seemed to fit anybody properly.

One particularly soggy Saturday, a rider ducked in more for shelter than shopping. We tried her in everything on the table. Nothing worked — the fit was wrong somewhere on every single pair.

That evening in the horsebox, listening to the rain on the roof and sharing a bar of Cadbury's, Emma said what everyone in the trade already knew: riders were fighting this same battle everywhere, and nobody was designing boots with an actual calf in mind. If we were going to do this, the fit had to come first.

A year on, same field, same rain — she came back. This time we had our own boots to show her. They fit. She's been back most years since.

That's the honest reason Bareback exists: somebody needed boots that actually fit, and nobody else was making them.

2007

Started out doing shows and events — one wet field at a time.

Building up

Grew to around 32 shows and events a year, fitting boots face to face at every single one.

2020

Covid shut every show overnight. Rather than pack it in, we moved the same fitting service onto the phone and video calls.

Now

Same advice, same care — just down the phone instead of a field. The shows may be gone; the face-to-face part isn't.

The people behind the boots

Five people who actually work here, in Worcestershire, and quite like their jobs.

Emma, founder of Bareback Footwear, on horseback

I'm happiest when I'm busy, surrounded by the people — and dogs — that matter most.

Chloe from the Bareback Footwear team, expert in fit and style

Knows every calf width and colourway we've ever made. Weekends are for dog walks or Cheltenham Races.

Phoebe from the Bareback Footwear team, head of social media and customer support

Answers most of the phones and emails. Also a super-mum, hiker and rock climber, so not much fazes her.

Keeps the website running. In his own time he's an ultra-runner and rock climber, so he clearly likes a challenge.

Happiest when I'm busy, surrounded by the people — and dogs — that matter most.

Proudly Midlands born and bred — Black Country through and through: hardworking, down-to-earth, with a sharp sense of humour and a healthy appreciation for a proper cuppa. I had a competitive streak growing up — I wanted to train as a boxer, then chased a career as a stunt rider for the thrill of it. Practicality won out in the end, though I've never quite lost my appetite for adventure.

These days that shows up in long walks through the Worcestershire countryside and Devon's picture-postcard villages, hacking out with friends, and trying new yoga poses (and cocktail recipes) with my daughter. Despite my Black Country roots, I've always been pulled toward the coast — it probably helps that Wilf is happiest with sand beneath his paws.

What actually matters to us

Fit, first

It's the reason the company exists. Every boot starts with a proper calf and foot shape, not the other way round.

Handmade in Portugal

Our factory has been making leather footwear since 1927. Same skill, same care, on every pair we sell.

Built to be looked after

A well cared-for pair of Bareback boots is made to be repaired, not replaced. We'd rather mend a good pair than sell you a new one.
