Lace Up Ankle Boots Buying Guide

Lace up ankle boots give you a fully adjustable fit that a pull-on boot can't match, tightening around the instep and ankle for extra support in the saddle or on uneven ground. Our range spans fully waterproof Storm models built around a Wil-Tex® membrane through to everyday leather lace-ups like the Buffalo and Harley, so there's a boot to suit wet yards, dry stables and everything in between.

Waterproof vs Non-Waterproof Lace Up Boots

Most of our lace up boots — the Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm, Rocky, Rocky Winter, Ottawa Storm, Chicago and Malvern — use a Wil-Tex® waterproof membrane to keep water out through the upper and around the zip or lace area. The Buffalo, Harley and Bramham are not waterproof; they use breathable or leather linings instead, which suit dry yards, stables and everyday wear better than standing water or driving rain.

If you're mucking out, hacking in wet fields or working an exposed yard through winter, choose one of the Storm or Rocky/Ottawa models. If you mainly need a smart, comfortable lace-up for dry conditions, the Buffalo or Harley will do the job without paying for waterproofing you don't need.

Best Lace Up Boots for Wet Weather and Winter Yard Work

For genuinely cold, wet conditions, the Rocky Winter Waterproof Boots and Ottawa Storm Waterproof Short Boots both add a natural sheep wool lining underneath their waterproof membrane, so they hold warmth as well as keeping water out. The standard Rocky Waterproof Boots use a Perlon foot bed with a moisture-wicking therma-tex layer instead of wool, which suits milder, damp days without the extra bulk.

The Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm and Blair Storm are all built around the same Wil-Tex® membrane and are a good year-round choice if you want waterproofing without a heavy winter lining.

Which Lace Up Boot Suits Your Calf and Ankle Fit?

The Kentucky Storm has fully adjustable laces right through the foot and ankle, so you can set the width and instep support yourself before slipping it on via the side zip — a good option if you find fixed-zip boots too snug or too loose around the ankle. The Idaho Storm and Bramham add elasticated stretch panels for extra give.

Chatsworth Storm and Blair Storm both fasten with a zip and gusset rather than a full lace, so the fit is more fixed; the product pages note that the Chatsworth in particular isn't the best choice if you have a high instep.

Lining, Comfort and Support Compared
  • Kentucky Storm — X-comfort moulded insole with memory foam technology and a padded ankle collar.
  • Idaho Storm — removable Cambrella lined insole with an air release valve in the heel for shock absorption.
  • Chatsworth & Blair Storm — gel IMPACT or X-comfort removable insoles with moisture-wicking linings.
  • Rocky & Rocky Winter — Perlon or sheep wool foot beds, both removable.
  • Buffalo — gel cushioned heel inserts to reduce foot fatigue on long days.
  • Harley & Bramham — leather-lined throughout with removable suede or leather insoles.
How Lace Up Ankle Boots Should Fit

A well-fitted lace up boot should feel snug through the ankle without pinching, with enough room to wiggle your toes at the front. Boots with a side or front zip, such as the Kentucky Storm and Idaho Storm, let you set the lace tension for width and instep before doing up the zip, which is worth doing every time rather than leaving the laces set from your last wear.

If you're between sizes, or have a particularly high or low instep, check the individual product page for fit notes — several of our jodhpur styles, including the Chatsworth Storm, call out specific fit considerations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all your lace up ankle boots waterproof?

No. The Kentucky Storm, Idaho Storm, Chatsworth Storm, Blair Storm, Rocky, Rocky Winter, Ottawa Storm, Chicago and Malvern boots all use a confirmed Wil-Tex® waterproof membrane. The Buffalo, Harley and Bramham are not waterproof and are better suited to dry, everyday wear.

Which lace up boots are best for winter and wet yards?

The Rocky Winter Waterproof Boots and Ottawa Storm Waterproof Short Boots are our warmest options, both lined with natural sheep wool underneath their waterproof membrane. For milder, damp conditions, the standard Rocky, Kentucky Storm or Idaho Storm are lighter, breathable alternatives that are still fully waterproof.

What's the difference between the Kentucky Storm and Idaho Storm?

Both are fully waterproof jodhpur boots with a Wil-Tex® membrane, but the Kentucky Storm fastens with fully adjustable laces and a side zip, giving you more control over the fit through the foot and ankle. The Idaho Storm instead uses a front zip with a cushioned YKK® pull and includes double side spur rests, making it a popular choice for riders who want quick on/off with a more fixed fit.

Do the Buffalo and Harley boots have a zip as well as laces?

The Harley has a full-length YKK inside zip alongside its laces, so you can lace it to fit once and then slip it on and off via the zip. The Buffalo is lace-only, with no additional zip, and relies on its lace-up front for a tailored fit through the foot and ankle.

Can I wear lace up ankle boots for everyday wear, not just riding?

Yes. The Buffalo and Harley are designed as much for everyday comfort as for yard work, with smart leather uppers that don't look out of place off the yard. The waterproof Storm and Rocky models are equally at home on a wet dog walk or school run as they are in the saddle.

How do I get the right fit around my ankle and instep?

Start with the laces loosened, put the boot on, then tighten evenly from the foot up to the ankle before fastening any zip. If you have a high instep, check the product page first — the Chatsworth Storm specifically notes it may not suit a high instep, whereas fully adjustable styles like the Kentucky Storm give you more room to compensate.
