Country Boots for Women

Most of our women's country boots use a Wil-Tex® waterproof membrane, which keeps water out while still letting your feet breathe, so they're a good choice for muddy fields, dog walks and standing around a yard in the rain. The Quebec, Vancouver, Dakota, Rocky, Kentucky, Chatsworth, Blair, Chicago, Hudson and Idaho Storm ranges all fall into this category.

A few styles are not waterproof, so are best kept for drier days: the original Idaho Jodhpur Boots, Buffalo Boots, Andalucia Boots and Detroit Steel Toe Cap Boots all use breathable linings rather than a waterproof membrane. They're still hard-wearing and comfortable, just not built for standing in puddles.

If you've struggled with boots gaping or pinching around the calf, look for our Wide Fit tag. The Quebec Pull-On Boots, Quebec Zip-Up Ankle Boots and Quebec Wool-Lined Zip Boots all offer a wide calf option, as does the Dakota Country Boots.

For more flexibility, the Andalucia Boots use a full-leg lace system that adjusts calf width by up to 3.5cm, and the Kentucky, Chatsworth and Blair jodhpur ranges use adjustable laces so you can loosen them across a wider calf or ankle as needed.

For the wettest days, choose a boot with a full waterproof membrane and a warm lining. The Rocky Winter Boots and Quebec Wool-Lined Zip Boots both pair a Wil-Tex® membrane with natural wool or shearling, making them our warmest options. The Ottawa Storm Short Boots add a Dual Grip outsole that copes well with muddy yards as well as riding.

If you're after a proper jodhpur boot, the Idaho, Kentucky, Chatsworth, Blair and Chicago ranges are all designed with spur rests, a supportive shank and a close ankle fit for riding. The waterproof Idaho Storm Waterproof Jodhpur Boots and non-waterproof Idaho Jodhpur Boots share the same shape, so pick based on whether you need weatherproofing. The Andalucia Boots are a taller, more traditional equestrian option with a full-length rear zip and adjustable lacing.

• Sheep wool and shearling: Hudson, Rocky Winter, Ottawa and the Quebec Wool-Lined Zip Boots use natural wool for extra warmth in winter.

• Moulded shank support: most of our country and jodhpur boots include an integrated moulded shank for arch support and balance.

Country boots should feel snug through the ankle but never tight across the calf. If you have a higher instep, styles with a full-length zip or opti-zip – such as the Quebec Zip-Up ranges – are easier to get on and off than pull-on styles. If you're between calf widths, choose a Wide Fit option or an adjustable lace-up style rather than sizing up your shoe size, as this won't change calf width.

For riding, jodhpur boots such as the Idaho, Kentucky and Chatsworth ranges are cut closer to the ankle to sit comfortably under a stirrup, while taller styles such as the Hudson and Andalucia boots suit those wanting more leg coverage for colder rides or longer days outdoors.

They share the same jodhpur shape, spur rests and arched shank, but the original Idaho Jodhpur Boots use a breathable leather lining with no waterproof membrane, while the Idaho Storm boots add a Wil-Tex® waterproof lining with a sealed zip. Choose Storm if you'll be out in wet weather, or the original if you mainly need a dry-weather riding boot.

If you're mainly walking rather than riding, either style will work – it comes down to how much leg coverage and warmth you want.
